Jiuligang Formation

Jiuligang Fm

Period:
Triassic

Age Interval:
Middle Late Triassic, (TJ82)

Province:
Hubei

Type Locality and Naming

It was named by Chen Gongxin in 1975. The named section is located in Jiuligang, Yuan'an County, Hubei Province.

Synonym:

Lithology and Thickness

It is mainly composed of yellow-gray, yellow-brown siltstone, argillaceous siltstone, mudstone and carbonaceous shale, interbedded with feldspar quartz sandstone and fine sandstone. The thickness is 278 ~ 378 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Siltstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The conformational contact is between conglomerate and underlying yellow-green silty marl of Badong Fm at the bottom. [However, regionally, the Badong Fm is also overlain by the Yingzuishan Fm.]

Upper contact

The conformational contact to the overlying Wanglongtan Fm is between conglomerate and overlying yellow-brown feldspar quartz sandstone at the top.

Regional extent

The lithology and thickness of this formation vary greatly and the distribution is limited. It is mainly found in Nanbar-Jingshan District of Hubei Province. Haihuigou in Jingmen County in the east is dominated by quartz sandstone with siltstone and carbonaceous shale with thickness of 416 to 540 m. To the west, it is 278 to 378 m in Yuan 'an, 250 m in Dangyang County, and 360 to 500 m in the north. The strata are equivalent to the lower coal formation of Xiangxi Gr. Coeval with lower Shazhenxi Fm in nearby region.
